Take Me Home

Take Me Home was written at the request of my oldest sister. Her husband had been in excruciating back pain for several months. As he frequently lay in the hot tub, which provided only temporary relief, he began formulating this song. He is neither a poet nor a musician, but it meant something to him. (Thankfully, he eventually, after several years and surgeries, found relief from the pain). During those intervening years my sister would sometimes casually mention that I ought to put his “song” to music. But, it always seemed too vague to attempt.

Finally, in 2020, after my brother-in-law had regained his health, and I knew we had a sisters’ reunion coming up, I decided to try to compose something, out of what little description I had, for my sisters to sing to said brother-in-law. My sister gave me a very rough idea of the lyrics, and the only thing she could say about the tune was that it went really low on the final “Home”.

So, I got to work, trying to formulate the lyrics poetically and making sure the ending descended to a really low note.

My sisters sang the SSA arrangement that spring of 2020. He whole-heartedly approved. Ironically, it was his wife, my oldest sister, who passed away suddenly the following spring. My brother-in-law requested that his song be sung at her funeral. Take Me Home was sung by a chorus of sisters, sisters-in-law, cousins and nieces. It truly was beautiful! And, I was so thankful that I had followed the prompting to put his ideas to music when I did.
